The Morning After
Here is a clear and unadulterated statement that the two on-duty surviving engineers clearly state there was massive amounts of water in the engine room. It is nothworthy that engineer Treu kept to this version in the first interrogation he was subjected to, but in dubsequent hearings omitted these facts. Treu even confirmed that efforts were made to try, via the emergency bilge pumps, to excise the water that was entering the vessel.
Practical Consequences
It can be concluded these early statements strongly contradict the official sequence of events that simultaneously were being established. Since the source of the information are the engineers, who most likely had the best overview of the course of events taking place, it is essential to take this very serious.
However, this did not happen. Not only did Treu alter the information he initially put forward, but the matter was never followed up by representitives of the investigation. On the contrary, it is clear the issue was burried and never mentioned in any official report.
The complete absence of an explanation how the engine room was flooded is nothing short of ostentatious.
Further Reading
Why this is of relevance is explainedin in more detail under the Estonia tab on this page. For an even deeper analysis it is recomended to read the book “The Disregarded Witness”, which is available for order through links provided on the main page.
The book penetrates more deeply in to the case, whereas that which is presented here is more of a summary.
